Bread Pudding Recipe

Bread and Butter Pudding is one of the British classic dessert recipes. I have heard it originated from a shortage of food, and nobody wanted to waste even a tiny amount of it. That is why, instead of throwing stale bread away, people made this dish.

Nowadays, when more and more of us are interested in zero waste principles, making this fantastic dessert may be not only a delicious experience but also our little deed to help protect our planet.

Bread Pudding Recipe Easy

Even if you are only starting your adventure with cooking, you will have no problem with preparing this dessert as it is really easy to make.

Firstly, you should collect the ingredients. They may vary slightly between different types of bread pudding recipes. However, you will always need simple ingredients like bread, butter, milk, cream, eggs, and sugar in general. But then, depending on a recipe you follow, your preferences and ... contents of your pantry, you can be very creative. You can use a different type of bread {toast or challah bread, French bread, etc.}, you can also choose between stale bread and fresh bread. You may add powdered sugar or granulated sugar. Additionally, if you are on a calorie diet, you could use single cream instead of full-fat cream.

Depending on the flavor you would like to achieve, you may add cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract or Bourbon. And if you would like to make a deluxe version of it, add golden raisins or pieces of chocolate. Or follow my mother-in-law's example and add some orange marmalade!

Bread Pudding How To Make

Once you have all the ingredients ready, prepare a casserole dish or other flame-proof baking dish by greasing all of its sides with melted butter. You could also use individual ramekins instead of one big container if you prefer to have individual portions.

After you slice the bread {you could also cut the edges of bread if you prefer}, and butter each piece. Prepare the custard by whisking the milk, cream, eggs, sugar and spices. Transfer layers of slices into the dish and, if you use raisins or chocolate pieces, sprinkle them on top of each layer. Pour the egg mixture over bread and leave for a minimum of 20-25 minutes to soak. Afterwards, put your bread and butter pudding into the preheated oven. Baking will take approx. for 30-40 minutes.

You can eat it hot or cold, by itself or with some extras like a scoop of ice cream, vanilla sauce or fruit.

Bread Pudding Recipe Best {for me ;)}

Although, as I mentioned earlier, there are many different bread pudding recipes, I would like to share one that you can hardly call bread pudding recipe old fashioned!

It is my version of a dessert I had in New Orleans. The original included pieces of chocolate, Bourbon and tasted heavenly but with a bit of devilish kick from the liquor. I loved it so much that I recreated it in my kitchen. However, I used amaretto instead of Bourbon and added some almond slices for the extra texture. I am not going to deny; it is not the healthiest nor the lightest dessert ever. But it is an amazing bread pudding that especially the older family members will appreciate a lot.

Chocolate Bread and Butter Pudding

  • 12 slices of bread, preferably sweet like challah or brioche bread
  • 50 g very soft butter
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • 50 g chopped chocolate
  • 20 g flaked almonds
  • 2 eggs
  • 300 ml double cream
  • 150 ml milk
  • 4 tbsp Amaretto liquor or rum
  • 2 tbsp Demerara sugar

  1. Grease all sides of a baking dish with melted butter.
  2. Butter each slice of bread, cut in half and place one layer of the buttered bread slices (butter side down) in the prepared baking dish. (Choose one that will allow you to put half of the slices in one layer).
  3. Sprinkle the layers with sugar, chocolate and almond flakes.
  4. Put the second layer of bread slices on top, this time buttered side up.
  5. Make the egg custard mixture: in a mixing bowl, beat the eggs, cream, milk and alcohol until combined, pour over the bread layers.
  6. Sprinkle the top with the Demerara sugar and leave to stand for at least 20-25 minutes.
